Beuchat Marseillaise Rubber Weight Belt

Natural rubber · Quick-release metal buckle · Multiple lengths

The benchmark rubber freediving belt: elastic rubber, genuine quick-release buckle, and durability that holds up to years of salt water use. This is what the other belts are compared against.

—— What we like
  • + Elastic rubber maintains tension at depth as wetsuit compresses
  • + Quick-release metal buckle, the real safety-critical feature
  • + Durable construction that lasts years with basic care
  • + Available in multiple lengths to suit different waist sizes
  • + Widely available through dive shops and online
—— What to know
  • − Rubber degrades faster than nylon in direct sunlight, must store carefully
  • − Lead weights threaded manually, takes practice to load
  • − No integrated weight pockets

Overview

The Beuchat Marseillaise is the belt many freedivers start on and never replace. Rubber belts are cheap and slow to wear out, so the reasons to pick one over another are the buckle and the rubber, and those are the two things this review looks at.

Why Rubber Matters

The physics are simple: rubber stretches. At depth, water pressure compresses your wetsuit: a 5mm neoprene suit becomes effectively thinner at 20m, and your waist circumference shrinks slightly with it. A rubber belt contracts with that compression, keeping constant tension on the weights. A nylon belt doesn't: it loosens, and the weights shift.

This isn't a theoretical concern. Divers who've switched from nylon to rubber for the first time reliably notice improved weight stability on descent and better trim throughout the dive.

The Quick-Release

The metal buckle is the safety-critical component of any weight belt. The Beuchat quick-release is the classic Marseillaise design: a single pull releases the entire belt, dropping the weights and increasing your positive buoyancy immediately. The Cressi rubber belt uses the same style of buckle at a slightly lower price.

The action should be tested with your buddy before every dive session: they should be able to find and pull your buckle in under three seconds in a simulated emergency. If they can't, because the buckle is buried under a wetsuit or positioned awkwardly, adjust the placement.

Build Quality

Rubber belts of this type age slowly when they are rinsed in fresh water and dried out of direct sun. The usual long-term wear is surface oxidation on the rubber exterior, the kind of patina that develops on any rubber exposed to sun and salt, and it does not change how the belt holds tension. The part worth inspecting each season is the buckle: rinse the sand out of it and check that it still releases with a single pull.

Questions about
Beuchat Marseillaise Rubber Weight Belt.

01 Why use rubber instead of nylon for a freediving weight belt? +
Rubber stretches and contracts with the pressure changes your wetsuit experiences at depth. At 20m, your wetsuit compresses as pressure increases, making your waist effectively narrower. A rubber belt contracts with it, keeping tension on the weights. A nylon belt loosens and the weights shift or slide. For any wetsuit diving past 10m, rubber is the correct choice.
02 How do I thread lead weights onto a rubber belt? +
Thread the rubber belt through the slot in the lead weight, fold the belt back over itself, and pull tight. The rubber's friction holds the weight in position. Thread all weights before putting the belt on. Load the heaviest weights toward the back of the hips for better trim.
03 How long does the Beuchat belt last? +
3-7 years with correct care: rinse with fresh water after every use, dry before storing, and keep away from direct sunlight. UV is the primary degradation mechanism for natural rubber. A belt stored in direct sun will crack within a season; one stored in a bag lasts years.
04 What size belt do I need? +
Measure your waist with the wetsuit on, then add 15-20cm for the threading and buckle overlap. Most adult divers in a 5mm wetsuit use a 130-145cm belt. Beuchat offers multiple lengths; buy the closest match rather than the longest available.
